The Skywalker Symphonies: John Williams and the Music of Star Wars is a new book by film musicologist and music theorist Frank Lehman, that offers the first ever in-depth and synthetic exploration of all nine of John Williams’s monumental scores for the Star Wars franchise. Published by Oxford University Press and released in August 2026, this book arrives just in time for the 50th anniversary of the Skywalker Saga.
Part of OUP’s Music/Media series (series editor Daniel Goldmark), The Skywalker Symphonies is a book that aims to do justice to the musical power and complexity George Lucas’s epic space operas. Spanning over 450 pages, the book is stuffed with carefully annotated musical examples, detailed diagrams and charts, and bountiful citations and references.
Rather than progress from film-to-film, Lehman tackles the franchise holistically, through a number of fascinating musicological themes and questions. Across its nine chapters, Lehman explores a wide range of topics and ideas, from musical rhymes to leitmotivic transformation to epic narration. In addition, The Skywalker Symphonies includes a glossary of relevant music theory and film studies terms, appendicies listing all the saga’s leitmotifs plus their opening measures, and a companion website that offers links to each and every musical passage or idea discussed within.
